week 01 - irky ib indulgences

Writer's picture: Daniel LDaniel L

hi! i thought i would post during the week but i didn't... more about that later

either way, we're back with the blog and as per the edit on the last post i'm organising the blog into sections that may or may not receive updates each week (for now i'll list them all even if i have nothing really to say about them), appearing alphabetically:

  1. College Applications

are you serious..... why is this first 💀💀💀

oh well i guess some higher force wants me to recognise that this is an imperative... especially since this is, like olympiad preparation, a long, continuous process that requires like. actual planning and shi

well for now i guess all i can do is to secure my recs (i think i have one so far confirmed) and think about my college list. since im taking ib i figured i should definitely take advantage of that and apply internationally--probably at least considering oxbridge / lse / imperial ? i am pretty sure i can get a 41 on ib so as to satisfy all the requirements from the above's engineering programs. also im getting more and more into pl and football in general so why not 💀 also have not thought about canadian schools yet. maybe ubc as a safety, and utoronto or smt

in terms of reaches i think i am set as i kind of was aiming for them ? but like not anymore but i still am aware of the top engineering schools

in terms of matches/targets i think i have a decent list and it is here that like ive really changed my opinion about some schools like purdue and cornell

and then im just kind of at a loss for what safeties to apply to--ideally they would be public but in WA there are a lot of guaranteed admission schools so maybe potentially liberal arts colleges are an option to look into? either way there are probably bigger concerns than safeties right now...

I don't really like how my current activities add up with my career/major interests. i have a problem where i am interested in too many things (duh) and like i have a great origin story with electrical engineering but besides from physoly my other like activities do not match up particularly well with my intended major of EE/engineering in general, especially if something's ee program is combined with cs (cough, berkeley). it's probably too late to change that and it's not like my extracurriculars are bad or unfruitful or uninteresting to me--it's just nagging on the back of my mind that they are somewhat maybe unrelated. but is that certainly a bad thing in the grand scheme of things? i don't know...

moving on.

2. Competitive STEM Olympiads

yea. i know. a convoluted name but is there really a better way to describe these things? 💀 comment down below trust

so yeah the short conclusion is i havent been grinding olys at all. why would i be? oh... what about atkins you say? yeah...

3. Formula 1

it's crazy how last week this time lando norris had just retired from the sprint race and qualified p9 and p5 for the sprint and race respectively. and it's not an understatement that i was in tears for most of the final laps and the podium celebration, it was just a really phenomenal event i guess and i also think i see spots of norris' 2021-24 career in myself...

also bruh why is pierre soo unlucky :"( vsc / sc ruined race

either way, im kind of excited for imola as there is no race this weekend, and that there'll be LOADS of upgrades! also....maybe it will rain...? hopefully? pretty please?

alas i may not even be allowed to watch the race idk ripp

4. other sports

at this point in time this is mainly other motorsports and football

so ive kind of become a spurs fan lol i honestly dk why

i also really really want arsenal to win the pl title LOL and of course i still fan mbappe but rip psg

hopefully dortmund wins cause it's a really nice story!

also mbappe going to madrid will probably end up being like mnm and fall apart so i actually dont want to see that happen. although i'll be happy too be proven wrong 10 years later when they get 7 or 8 cls lmao

also dang why are there so many formula e roookies this week lol all of them racing in wec rip

mahindra somehow clutched??? i dont even understand how that happened lol

talking about wec i actually support the fias decision as it was like the only way the race could have finished its designated length... salty ferrari fans are just different rip

also hertz jota are crazy i guess and toyota is actually kinda screwed

can the spurs clutch against city please? :)

5. gaming

ah yes so here's the reason why i havent been posting during the week

even though ive gotten off f1 mobile more and more ive kind of picked up brawl stars cause it seems like almost everyone is doing so and like im constantly playing w friends so its kind of nice,.. also like ive been getting good at cordelius which also contributes to me grinding lol rip

redownloaded f1 clash today. the game is as bad as it was.

ive set time limits for myself on each gaming session... hopefully i actually follow them. if i do, my time will be vastly better managed

6. school stuffs / clubs

to be honest right now everything's kind of in a lull due to testing season, but sciclub is still going so why not talk about that :) i really think fermi questions are a great way to engage all the subject mains because it actually invites thought no matter what topic it is...

i feel quite happy about how our merch is turning out, and lucky that shipping actually doesn't take too long... i've currently set a provisional deadline for the orders on 20 may such that we can actually make sure we get the merch before the endofyear party on 7 jul... it would be a great sendoff!!

also i still have no clue whether chem club will be rebranded as chem(petitive physics) club..... comment thoughts down below

i've decided to merch IB with this section because it will end soon and i don't see a point in having such a section for a prolonged period of time... so here goes the testing brief:

on monday we had the math paper 3. the topics were: probability distributions; differentiation and functions respectively for the two questions. Honestly, it felt very trivial compared to other paper 3's i've done... in fact i think people have been claiming both physics and math were quite easy this year which im not sure is a good thing for me as idk how well my IAs were scored... probably 7

on tuesday i finished ib history. i think my last minute studying was incredibly effective as i was able to churn out lots of content re: cold war in addition to my past background knowledge lolll. regarding apartheid i actually was lucky it wasn't more specific than "the division of races" or something and i was able to come up with a lot of examples which was good... it was just slightly interesting usage of the NP documents LOL because they so clearly did not fit with my argument so i had to use them as counterargs... rip; in terms of paper 2, i saw the social policies/opposition prompt and IMMEDIATELY abandoned the spr section LOL. so i did the two questions re: politics affected by war and cold war's social and cultural impact... my one reservation about each is: the first prompt technically quoted "politics isn't much affected by war" while i discussed two wars that affected politics a lot and rebutted the statement so idk if that's what they want to see really... and for the second one i kind of did not talk about culture like directly but instead more about stuff like music, religion, social organisation (for the social impact part) so idk if that's complete enough... hopefully 7.... although my HI score definitely will not be helping in that regard...

on wednesday i did apcs, which was free enough. i felt really terrible during the mcq and kinda slept through/was half awake the first 30 minutes. still finished with 10 mins to spare though. on the frq surprisingly i didn't have as much extra time than i expected but it's whatever, somehow many people were saying it wasn't free? which was like bonkers to me as i literally spent around 20% of my classtime this year actually doing work and still thought it was free... hopefully 5

on thursday we had the english paper 1, which i really liked. the texts were respectively a blog regarding success&directions of focus which i actually thought was kind of real... oh well... and the other one was a comic re: the Columbus experiment re: circadian rhythms. i loved both and i think i did quite well

on friday we finished the english paper 2, which had 3 bad prompts and one okay prompt which i peeked at cause the printing bleeds through and kind of planned out in my head before the time begun... turned out i really needed that time because i was still writing my conclusion when time was called...... it's whatever though because i put SO MUCH EVIDENCE in and at least i didn't do the myths and legends prompt ☠️☠️ hooooppeefully 7? LOL IO not helping but i can hope

next up and only remaining: french on thurs/fri

7. science bowl

i'm like incredibly washed with buzzing speed and ive kind of accepted that im just not built for it lol rip

either way still very excited to scrim noho a / b and to play in mnsbt!

re: mnsbt, it's been interesting trying to find people for ilake 2 LOL also noho is such a gods blessing for our program like HELLO THEYRE NICE GENEROUS AND TALENTED ahh i love noho <3

EDIT 11 may: i typed dast for mnsbt both times rip

8. science olympiad

i thought to combine this with the other competitions section but i figured i better remind myself i need to do the scioly officer application 💀

9. taylor swift

okay well i mean it's been 3 weeks since ttpd, and it's just been getting better. like i listened to the album in the original, intended order and literally there is not one song i can really really pick on until like 25 (SORRY ITS CUTE BUT .... kind of like 11 i just don't really like it. same with 15). my top picks still are: ttpd, gas, waolom, and fortnight. florida and cassandra get honourable mentions :) peter, prophecy, shs, and down bad get vibe mentions

in terms of the tour it's really like becoming her playground huh. like wow it seems so carefree and enjoyable now compared to like the american leg. kinda unhinged too but im here for it. ttpd set look better than ever but WHY CUT THE 1 / TLGAD / LONG LIVE?? rippp

10. misc

i cannot with these temps anymore like seriously this is not normal

also given solar irradiance constant of 1368 W/m^2 calculate the latitude of the weather station in question 🤔

okay, that was long... i spent nearly 30 mins writing lol this is not ideal. and i was getting pretty tired near the end. if it wasn't for ts or the other topics i am rly passionate about... idk i wouldve stopped probably

but then again this whole blog is about things im passionate about so :)

either way, farewell.... or not!

CHECK OUT INTERLAKE SCIENCE CLUB'S MERCH HERE PLEASEEE:

alright. see you next week :) oh since i'm posting on saturdays, this will be immediately post-mnsbt i guess. kind of interesting :) let's hope i do well LOLL
